If I am correct, the version of Media Center on WHS is like Windows 7 and the Windows 8 media center has some subtle differences. Or just stick with Windows 8.1 as I am to server my files. I also wanted to confirm it does run and serve Windows Media Center. I obtained a free (legally, of course) copy of WIndows Home Server 2011 and was wondering if it is pretty good for this kind of job. ![]() I was thinking of building a smaller, more compact tower to sit with the NAS units and just serve the files. So, my desktop PC is pretty much just a server now. I also have three network attached storage units that will provide me space for years to come. We stream our media via the Windows Media Center extender to the XBOX and also share through the homegroup on the laptop, my Surface and my wife's Surface. My desktop PC is primarily a file server, namely media. Suffice to say, I rarely go into my computer room to use my desktop PC. ![]() I have an Alienware laptop that is 3x the machine as my desktop and a Surface Pro 3 that my work purchased me to remain mobile in my perpetual 24/7 on call.
